The Rules:

1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.

The book nearest to me is The Sands of Time by Sidney Sheldon. It's an old book given to me by my husband years ago.
Boring, boring, boring.
The following year Monique decided she wanted to return to Paris again.
I'll pack my things, Teresa said.

I'm tagging Gigi, Juliana RW, Ricka, Vannie and Vhiel. Common guys, share your favorite book and let's have fun.

For Men, 40 and Older

What is prostate cancer? It is a disease in which cancer develops in the prostate. According to wikipeda, it occurs when cells of the prostrate mutate and begin to multiply out of control. Prostate cancer may cause pain, difficulty in urinating and erectile dysfunction. According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is least common among Asian men and most common among black men, with figures for white men in-between. It develops most frequently in men over fifty. This cancer can only occur in men, as the prostate is exclusively of the male reproductive tract.

I have read in an article that men who ejaculates up to 21 times in a month is far from having prostate cancer, compared to those who have 4 to 7 times. Having as many as 21 times lessens the risk and has the potential to remove carcinogenic cells in a man's body. For men, 40 years and older, it is advised to include fish high in omega-3 (like tuna and salmon) in your diet. Omega-3 contains antioxidants which help fight cancer-causing cells. Eating sardines at least 2 times in a week may also help lower the risk of having prostate cancer.

Oyster Shooter

According to Wikipeda, the common name oyster is used for a number of different groups of bivalve mollusks, most of which live in marine habitats or brackish water. True oysters or edible oysters are incapable of making gem-quality pearls. Oysters are a favorite among exotic foods and were an important food source in all coastal areas where they could be found.

Did you know that the Hebrews consider them unclean food? Oyster were once the staple food of the poor and now it is a luxury of the rich. They were even considered an aphrodisiac. And now, oyster is a shooter. Weird? I once saw this in a bar's beverage list. It's a Bloody Mary served in a shot glass with one plump oyster. I didn't have the nerve to try it.

In the Philippines, this shooter is called Hala Bira! How to drink this? Bottoms up! Don't chew on the oyster, eat it whole, but if you're really up to it go ahead and chew.

If you want to serve this drink on your next party, here's the recipe...

ingredients:

1 dozen oysters or more, raw or blanched, chilled
1 1/2 cups tomato juice
2 tsps. Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce
Tabasco sauce, as desired
rock salt
peppercorn, freshly ground
1/2 lemon
12 shot glass/measures of vodka about 1 1/2 cups)
12 shot glasses

procedure:

Place one oyster per shot glass
Arrange on a serving tray and chill.
In a pitcher, combine all remaining ingredients. Stir and chill.
When it's shooting time, fill each oyster shot glass with the Bloody Mary and serve.

How to make your own Bacon

The savory scents wafting from your kitchen as you crisp bacon for breakfast would surely wake up the whole family. Homemade bacon is so easy to make and gives you better control on the amount and type of preservatives that go into it. I found this very easy to prepare recipe from Food Magazine. I've tried it and my family loves it.

Ingredients:

1 kilo pork belly
2 tbsps refined sugar
1 tbsp refined salt
1 tbsp bacon powder
1 tbsp isolate
1 tsp carageenan
1 tsp phosphate
1/2 tsp curing salt
1/2 tsp MSG
1/2 tsp beef aroma
1/2 tsp meaty ginisa or meaty seasoning
1/4 tsp Vitamin C powder
1/4 tsp meat enhancer
1/4 tsp smoke flavor
1/2 cup chilled water
2 tbsp honey

Procedure:

1. Lay the meat strips flat in a suitable stainless, glass, or white plastic container. If you use plastic, make sure that it's not made of recycled plastic and that it's of food grade quality.

2. Prepare the curing ingredients.

3. Mix curing ingredients except honey.

4. Strain mixture through a wire sieve then stir in honey.

5. Pour half of the mixture on the surface of the sliced meat and massage very well for 2 minutes by repeatedly pressing and rubbing a rubber spatula over the meat surface.

6. Turn the meat over and repeat Step 5 on this side of the meat slices. Cover the meat and let cure in the middle portion of the refrigerator to develop color, aroma, and flavor, for 8 hours.

After curing, the bacon is ready to cook. Fry the bacon in a very small amount of fat, or if you are using a non-stick pan, you can eliminate the oil. Fry until golden brown.

Stop Your Suffering

Almost 50% of men and women in the world, 50 years and older suffer from hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are varicose veins of the rectum. Pain, itchiness and blood in stool are the most common symptoms. These symptoms may possibly lead to colorectal cancer if not taken care of. I have read in one article that we may not be aware of it but having hemorrhoids may mean something else. Most people according to him are not open to discussions when it comes to stool problems. He said, each one of us may possibly have or have had anal and rectal problems which should be discussed with a doctor. Hemorrhoids are inflamed blood vessels inside and around the anus and rectum. This happens during diarrhea, obesity and constipation. It may either be external or internal. Internal hemorrhoids don't usually hurt because there are few pain sensing nerves in the rectum. External hemorrhoids are situated within the anus and usually painful. Here are some tips to help ease the pain in case you have it. Do not sit for hours at a time, if you have to, take a break, stand up and move for at least 5 minutes. A cushion with a hole in the middle can ease the pressure and pain. Applying petroleum jelly inside the anus can make bowel movements less painful. Use a soothing anti-inflammatory agent on irritated hemorrhoids to reduce pain and itching. And most of all, do not scratch hemorrhoids, it will only become more irritated as the skin becomes damaged thus, intensifying the itching. To avoid hemorrhoids, it is best to consume at least 25 gms of fiber everyday. Whole grain bread and fruits are the best sources of fiber. Fiber supplements are also available in drugstore. I've seen in one in a tv commercial. It's in powder form and you can just mix it with either juice or water. Drinking at least 6 glasses of water can be very helpful. Water, really does our body good. Try to have a regular bowel movement and try to do it at the same time everyday.

Finding Mr. Right

It's February and love is very much in the air. Aside form June and December, February is also a marrying month. You are in love, engaged and soon to get married, but, have you tried asking yourself if he is the right man for you? Oooops, don't get me wrong. I am not insinuating anything but rather, give you to tips to know if he is the right one. I have been married for 21 years and to be honest these things never crossed my mind when I was younger. All I knew then was I am so in love with him. I am lucky my husband have been very good to me and to my children. He never cheated on me and stood by me through the years.

Going back to the tips, here's you should know. Choosing the right man is one thing that is really important in a relationship. If you think that everything you are looking for in a man is with him, try looking further and see if these qualities match.

Know his character. Before deciding on marrying him make a research on his personality. Ask his friends and relatives about him and how he behaves. Observe his actions and how he reacts in situations. Sometimes, when you are so in love, you tend to disregard this matter. Investigate the family background. It is very important to know that he came from a very good family. No weirdos, rituals or anything of a kind. Does he spend more time with friends than his family? Is he a drug user and does he drink too much alcohol? Consider checking on his educational background too. Doing so can give you an idea if he can provide for you and your soon-to-be family. Check his health. It is important to know if he's been treated in the past for psychological reasons. Is he the suicidal type? Was he ever admitted for heart problems or high blood pressure? These reasons, however, should not stop you from marrying him but at least you will have a good idea on how to deal with it in the future. Check his lifestyle. Does he spend his money wisely? Does he splurge on things? Does he have a criminal record? Know his plans for the future. He may not be earning too much but having a stable job is good enough. Know his culture too. It is important to know where he came from and try to familiarize yourself with his culture before marrying him. Most of all, consider marrying him for his good qualities and not by his good looks.

    Why God Made Friends
    ====================

God made the world with a heart full of love
Then He looked down from heaven above
And saw that we all need a helping hand
Someone to share with, who`ll understand

He made special people to see us through
In times of happiness and in sadness
A person whom we can always depend
Someone we can call a FRIEND

    same dog, different collar

After the controversial election to unseat the Speaker of the House, Jose De Venecia was finally dethroned. Congressman Prospero Nograles is now the new Speaker. For a few weeks, led by the president’s sons, pro administration congressmen have been planning about this. And the reasons behind the scheme? CHANGE! Change, according to my husband, is the most abused word in politics. I am not griping because I am a loyal fan of De Venecia. We all know that he is not a clean man and he’s been an ally to Gloria Arroyo for years. Choosing between two evils, JDV I think is the lesser one. Congressman Nograles is also very close to the first family and more “sipsip” to GMA than JDV. Nograles is exactly the same dog with different collar.

CHANGE??? There will be no change. For as long as these wicked leaders are seated, everything will just be the same. We can only expect change IF Congressman Nograles will go against Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and conduct investigations on the anomalous transactions of the First Gentleman and the presidential sons. Hmmm, this is quite impossible, in the first place, he was seated for the position to cover up for them, right? And IF he does, he should think twice because what happened to JDV can happen to him also.

At the end of the day, anyone who seats as the Speaker of the House, who comes from the current congress, has no integrity and credibility. So, to the 174 congressmen who voted for YES, please stop fooling us, we are not STUPID.

What Do We Get from Junk Foods?

Junk food is described as unhealthy food and has poor nutritional value. It often contains high levels of saturated fat, sodium, sugar and food additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG) and tartrazine and lacks protein, vitamins, minerals and calories from sugar and fats . Junk food has lots of flavors, very tasty and is very appealing not only to our kids but to us adults as well.

Junk food is the slang word for foods with limited nutritional value. I know it is going to be hard for us mommies to encourage our children to avoid junk foods and instead of radically banning junk foods in our homes it is best to do it gradually. When buying or eating junk foods, it is better to check on the nutritional value at the back of the package. Check on the sugar, salt and fat contents. Candies, gums, sweet desserts, salty foods, chips, fried fast food and carbonated drinks are some of the major fast foods. Hamburgers and french fries are also perceived as junk foods.

Consuming too much junk foods often result to obesity in most kids nowadays. It is better to encourage our kids to eat healthy snacks instead, and explain to them that eating too much junk foods may be harmful to their bodies. Buying and filling your refrigerator and pantry with healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, bread and whole grain crackers is one way to help them avoid junk foods. Encourage them to eat less of food products containing high fructose corn syrup usually found in catsup, barbeque sauce, in some fruit juices, sweetened yogurt and cereals.
