Are they really healthy?

Herbal Supplements, herbal remedies and dietary supplements are often seen as healthy because they're natural. The labels of these pop-in-the-mouth pills often come with the word "natural" or "herbal" but there are no assurance that they are safe. According to the Bureau of Food and Drug, these herbal supplements are tested for safety, not efficacy, and they have no effects that have been documented by clinical tests. But there are some issues on many effects when food supplements and pharmaceuticals are taken at the same time. Herbal medicines may interfere with one's medication regimen. Like for example, you are taking drugs to treat cardiovascular disease, the effect might increase when they are taken with some food supplements. In some cases, food supplements may decrease the effects of certain drugs.

The BFAD director also added that "Most cures from food supplements are based on their belief or mental power." The best way to avoid complications and future problems is to consult your doctor before you decide to take these herbal pill-poppers. Even multivitamins should be taken under the supervision of a doctor. Aside from the fact that they have no proven cures, most herbal supplements are expensive. These supplements might work out fine with healthy persons but if you are ill and under medication, don't take the risk.

Menopause - what works, what doesn't

Did you know that the average age of menopause is 51? The symptoms of menopause are worst at the onset and it usually last from 2 to 5 years.

The body produces less estrogen and progesterone during menopause and the ovaries stop producing eggs and the period becomes less frequent. Most women experience a few unpleasant effects as the hormone levels shift.

The most common signs are hot flashes, other women also complain of night sweats, insomnia, fatigue, vaginal dryness, loss of sex drive, mood swings [such as irritability, anxiety, crying spells], heart palpitations, difficulty focusing, dry eyes and skin and joint and muscle aches.

Studies revealed that taking hormone replacement drugs increased a woman's risk of heart disease, stroke, blood clots, breast cancer and gallbladder disease. Natural is still the best alternative to lessen the suffering.

Here are some of the things you should: Watch your intake of alcohol, spicy foods and caffeine. These trigger the symptoms. Exercise in the morning to help improve sleep. Dress in layers and wear fabrics that wick moisture and take deep breaths. You may still consider taking supplements but it would be best to consult your doctor first.

For more tips and the list of foods to eat and avoid, I have published an article a few months ago in my other blog.

The Ice Cream Personality Test

I was bloghopping when I stumbled upon this quiz and was curious on my ice cream personality. How about you? Take the quiz and have fun!

Your Ice Cream Personality:

You like to think of yourself as a fairly modest person. And it's true that you don't talk yourself up... but you're also pretty happy with who you are.

You are incredibly cautious. You rather miss out on something than make a mistake. No one would ever call you wild... but they would call you responsible.

You are a somewhat open minded person, but deep down you're fairly conservative. You don't like trying new things very much. And if you do find something new you like, you stick with it.

You tend to have a one track mind. You prefer not to multitask.

You are a serious and contemplative person. You definitely do your own thing in life.

Stir-fry Secret

To avoid a stir--fry getting soggy, pour the sauce down the sides of the pan when adding sauce. This makes the sauce warm by the time it reaches the center. Adding a room temperaure sauce cools the hot wok and the dish ends up soggy. The trick makes your stir-fry stay hot and crispy.

Weekly Question #5

This week on Greenbucks' weekly question:

What lies ahead for me (and my family) during these tough times? Do we know where we are heading?

My answer:

I'll give you an honest answer, I am not really sure where we are heading. With the price of gas continuously rising and the world's obsession with biofuel has pushed the world's food prices sky high. The middle class is slowly dwindling. Hubby and I have been working really hard and have cut down on our expenses. It's hard to admit that after all these chaos, society will only have 2 classes left, the rich and the very poor. I will not allow my family to belong to the latter, having 2 jobs is not an option but 3 would do the job.

The Alternative Therapy

Back in 1997, my FIL had a heart attack while hearing an early morning mass. At the hospital, he was immediately recommended for a heart by-pass operation. We were really surprised because he seems to be a very healthy person. He would do his routine every morning when he wakes up. He does not take alcohol, he doesn't smoke and he stays away from fatty foods. No one among us knew that he's been having symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pains and lack of energy.

He had a successful operation and a fast recovery and now his heart is as good as new. If only we knew then about chelation therapy, then he could have avoided the surgery. Chelation is used by some alternative practitioners to treat hardening of the arteries. Cardio Renew, an oral chelation therapy will chelate calcium and other minerals and heavy metals out of the body resulting in clean arteries. When the arteries are blocked, blood flow is restricted and the body won't be receiving proper nourishment. This results to poor health condition. Chelation helps reduce the blockage and increase circulation making the body operate normally once again. It is safe, fast and cost effective.

Please click on the links for more information on chelation therapy and its effectiveness.

The Nails

Did you know that your fingernails can tell your state of health? Here are some of the signs you should look for.

YELLOW nails indicate that you could possibly have a fungal infection or liver problem. BLUISH nails may be a sign of anaemia or lung trouble [like asthma]. Nails that are BRITTLE and DRY may signal that you lack calcium in your body. Abnormally THICK nails could possibly mean improper blood circulation. THIN nails could possibly mean you lack vitamin B12 in your body. Unusually SQUARE and WIDE nails may suggest that you have a hormonal disorder. Nails which seem easily to CHIP, PEEL and CRACK might be a sign of an inadequate diet.

Nails reflect what you eat. If you are living on fatty foods like burgers and fries, don't expect your nails to be strong and healthy. Remember that no nail care product alone can give you healthy nails. Here are some ways I found to keep them looking their best.
  • Don't abuse your nails. Never use them to poke or pry on things. Buy a toothpick!
  • No nail biting please! This habit can damage the nail bed.
  • Wear rubber gloves to protect your nails when gardening or when using soap and water for prolonged periods and when using chemicals.
  • Trim fingernails and clean under the nails regularly.
  • Nails need moisturizers too. Rub lotion into your nails when moisturizing your hands.

The Carpet Cleaners

Carpet cleaning could be a daunting task especially if you're a busy mommy. When you have small kids at home, food and beverage stains could not be avoided. Should you decide to clean it yourself, so many things will have to be taken into consideration. Things like which cleaning products has the best solution for your type of carpet and carpet cleaning needs. If you have a wool carpet, you must remember that wool can not be cleaned with any machines or heated products. You can't even bleach your carpet to make it look new again, doing so may cause irreparable damage to your carpet.

So why worry yourself when professional carpet cleaners can do the dirty job for you? Remember, you are not just cleaning your carpet by simply shampooing it and rinsing it with water, then dry it again. You need professional carpet cleaners to break down dirt and dust, draw out deep down build up and kill germs and bacteria. They can do all these while maintaining the original beauty of your carpet. All these for a reasonable price. So the next time you decide to have your carpets cleaned call toll free at 1-800-675-7768.

Food Friday: Strawberries

The strawberries came from my aunt who went home from Tokyo the other day. The berries were so sweet and juicy, the kids gobbled them up in just a few minutes.

Strawberries are not only heart-shaped but are also heart-protective. They serve as anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer fruit all rolled into one because they are filled with phytonutrients that promote our health. They are capable of decreasing blood pressure, hence, reducing the risk of heart disease associated with high blood pressure. Eating strawberries everyday will give you a healthy heart.

Ripe is Better

Did you know that ripe fruits contain more antioxidants? This is because the breakdown of chlorophyll produces health boosting antioxidants called catabolytes. Chlorophyll is what makes the color of unripe fruits. For so long, nobody knew what happens to the chlorophyll in this process, but in a recent study, it was known that NCCs [nonfluorescing chlorophyll catabolytes] replace the chlorophyll in ripe fruits. NCC is a highly active antioxidant and can be found in the peel or the flesh nearest to the peel. Now I know why my mom always tell us to eat the peel of an apple or a pear. To simply put it, when the fruit is still raw, the chlorophyll decomposes and turns into any other color when it ripens.

Kitchen Cures

Instead of rummaging through your medicine cabinets when you're feeling lousy, why not check you kitchen cabinets first? The use of foods and herbs as remedies is a centuries-old tradition proven to relieve ailments. Here are some cures you'll find in the kitchen:

As far back as 2000 BC, honey was used as a dressing to cleanse and heal wounds. Recently, scientists have discovered that honey has natural antibiotic properties that can prevent infections and hasten healing. To treat minor cuts and scrapes, gently rub a little honey on the wound, then cover with gauze or band aid.

Ginger root has been shown to quell nausea. It has also been shown to fight motion sickness and relieve stomach upset associated with migraine. It may even ease hangover. Ginger snaps and ginger ale may be too mild to help. Sucking on candied ginger or making a tea by steeping slices of raw ginger in hot water may help a lot. For motion sickness, try ginger half an hour before traveling.

Chamomile is derived from the daisy family and can be brewed into a strong but soothing tea. Chamomile's mild sedative properties ease restlessness and nervousness and may make you sleepy.

Mint contains menthol, an aid that can calm an upset stomach and relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. It helps expel gas and has antispasmodic properties that can relieve cramping caused by irritable bowel syndrome. After a meal or whenever indigestion strikes, drink peppermint tea.

Chicken soup soothes sniffles. Chicken soup is really comfort food. The amino acid found in chicken acts as a decongestant. Adding diced chili peppers and minced raw garlic to the chicken soup right before serving can produce great effects. The capsaicin found in chili peppers acts as decongestant too and raw garlic produces natural antibiotic [cooking ruins the effect].

Yogurt is a proven yeast fighter. Studies show that women who ate a cup of yogurt daily lessened the number of flare ups of chronic yeast infections.

Cranberry juice fights UTIs [urinary tract infections]. A cup a day reduces the frequency of these painful infections in susceptible women. The juice contains compounds that appear to prevent bacteria from clinging to the lining of the urinary tract. If you are prone to UTIs you may drink as little as 3 ounces daily for preventive measure. If you already have it, I would advice you to see a doctor, you might need antibiotics.

Milk relieves minor skin irritation such as mild burns or itching caused by an allergic reaction. The casein in milk is a protein that helps reduce inflammation. To do: mix equal parts milk and water [low fat or skim] in a bowl, then dip a lightweight cloth. Wring the cloth gently then place the compress on the skin. Repeat the process after 30 seconds for 10 times, 2 or 3 times a day, until redness and inflammation subside.

Food Friday: Green Tea

My favorite ice cream! I truly enjoy FIC's [Fruit in Ice Cream] green tea flavored ice cream. Last week I went grocery shopping and couldn't resist the ice cream when I passed by their booth. Many people may not like the taste but green tea provides us with many health benefits and several studies show that green tea helps protect against cancer.

Memory Stick

Since I started blogging I started taking a lot of pictures too. Wherever I go, I make sure my digital camera is always in my bag. Having a high quality memory stick not only allows me to store hundreds of photos but it also enables me to make real-time recording of high resolution videos. This little piece of plastic does so much that I also purchased one for my mobile phone.

A Letter From Santa

In these modern times where kids are definitely smarter, do you think they still believe in Santa Claus? My answer: Yes they do! They believe in Santa but they're a little different than we were kids. I remember one Christmas when hubby made a letter from Santa for my kids and just dropped it to our mailbox. When the kids saw the letter, we were bombarded with questions like... How did it get there? Where did it come from? Did Santa really send it? How come it's typewritten? How come there's no seal? And where's the signature? My son even asked for a proof that the letter indeed came from Santa. Hubby and I looked at each other and had to make up stories just to answers those questions. Lesson learned: the next time you write Santa Letters, you have to be smarter and make it more believable, lol.

The following year I knew we had to be smarter, if we want our kids to believe that there really is Santa, we have to keep the magic. I had to search the web for the right way to write and create believable letters from Santa. I also had to look for unique and authentic stationeries and envelopes and make sure that they can't find them in bookstores. I never really expected that what I will find will save me from all the hard work.

I have to admit that I, too was mesmerized when I found this site. You will certainly wish you're a kid again. I loved the Santa package and the way they did the letters. The package contained personalized Santa letters and custom Santa goodies. The package indeed sustained the enchantment of Santa! When the kids opened the box, they couldn't believe their eyes when they saw their names written on Santa's Nice Certificate. That was really one Christmas that hubby and I can't forget. By the way, here's the letter...

The Silent Killer

Women are much more likely than men to die of a first heart attack and women under 50 are three times more likely. Sounds troubling isn't it? Stroke is often thought of as an old man's disease but more women die from it due to some factors. Birth control pills, hormone therapy and pregnancy put us at risk. Cardiologists say that heart disease starts early, with the earliest building blocks of a heart attack forming in your teens and early 20s.

It is important to know the signs of a heart attack. Chest pain or discomfort is the most common symptom and it is the same for men and women. But women are slightly more likely to have subtler warning signs: Upper body pain [ in the arms, back, neck, jaw or stomach], Shortness of breath, Breaking out in a clod sweat, Nausea or Vomiting, Light-headedness.

For a healthier heart, you better start moving. Thirty minutes or more of walking at least 5 times a week will not only help you manage your weight. It can also boost your mood and get your heart working more efficiently.

Your Most Valuable Asset

Many people purchase life insurance and insure their material possessions like their cars and their homes without realizing that they are forgetting to insure their most valuable asset until it is too late. What if you suddenly become sick or injured and can't work? Do you think you'll still be able to pay for your bills and maintain your standard of living? Purchasing a disability insurance insures a beneficiary his earned income at a time that he can't work because of sickness and disability. Even professionals like a well-known physician with a high paying job should have a physician disablity insurance. Whatever status you have in a society, having a disability insurance can help you get through all your expenses and help protect you and your family from going into serious debt.

The Bedtime Twitch

Have you ever had bedtime twitches? Just as you are drifting off to sleep, your body suddenly jolts upward and awaken you. It happens to me a lot of times and had no idea what's causing this.

I was reading a magazine last night and I found an article about it. The involuntary muscle movement is called "myclonic jerks" or sleep starts. It is often accompanied by "mini dreams" about falling. Experts say these are commonly triggered by light, noise, movement or uncomfortable sleep positions. It is generally harmless [whew!] but it can spoil sleep quality.

They suggested trying this to reduce the frequency: wear loose clothing to bed, keep your bedroom dark, close the bedroom door to keep out pets and wear ear plugs to block noise.

There are some rare cases though that myclonic jerks can signal an underlying problem like nerve damage, so it's best to consult your doctor if the tip does not help.

Books for Daddy

The kids and I were discussing earlier on what we should give their dad on Fathers' Day. My daughter said she already bought a perfume. My son suggested we get him some books since he's very interested in history books. Problem is, I will be very busy in the next few days so I might not have the time to drop by the bookstore. I'd probably order some history books online.

Cuz' Weight Loss Scheme

If there's anything that I don't really need right now, it's another diet that doesn't work. I have tried working out for 30-40 minutes daily but the moment I stop, the pounds comes back. Every weight-loss scheme that I've tried failed. I think it's time I try diet pills. I was afraid to try it before because it might have side effects, but when my cousin suddenly went slim. I had to ask her what she did and answered me with diet pills!

Food Friday: Dates

The yummy dates given by a special friend to my FIL. The dates were dipped in white chocolate and pistachio nuts, as you can see, cashew nuts were inserted in the middle. Truly delicious but sooooo sweet you can't eat much. Dates are fruits of the date palm, a tree native to Northern Africa and the Middle East. They can be eaten fresh, these are also dried and eaten whole as a snack or included in desserts.

Personalized Gifts

It's my niece's birthday next week and she is turning 6. I am still looking for some more books to give her because she loves to read a lot. I already got her some when I dropped by the book store last week. I am planning to give her more this time.

I happen to mention this to a blogger friend and she told me about Kids Personally web site. I checked the site and was amazed with their children's books collection. They are all personalized and very affordable.

I got her the Silver Swan, My Birthday Surprise and The Sibling Book. The Silver Swan is a fairy tale book about a princess and a shining silver swan and their ride through the forest.

My Birthday Surprise is about daydreaming of a perfect birthday party with all the stuffs: balloons, cake, ice cream, clowns and gifts only to be surprised that it will indeed come true at the end of the story.

The Sibling Book is a terrific gift for her because her mom is expecting another baby. It talks about coping with the arrival of a new baby, it will help her fully understand that even if her parents are busy preparing for the coming of the new baby being an older sister can be a lot of fun.

All three books has quality hard covers with washable surfaces. They also come with a plastic where she can insert her photo inside the front cover. I'm sure she'll be very happy next week, when she gets hold of her new books.

Insurance in an Instant

Hubby and I recently purchased a life insurance because we strongly believe in it. We chose term life insurance because we are on a limited budget and the initial premium fits our budget. Your coverage can help you pay off a loan and at the same time provide extra life insurance protection while you are raising your kids. The process was fairly easy, without giving any personal information, we were able to get our life insurance quotes. It's like purchasing a life insurance in an instant. Other companies will ask so many things about you before you can get your quotes.

Brother is Going Home

My brother and his kids are going to spend their summer vacation here in Manila. We're all so excited preparing for their arrival next week because it's been 3 years since they last went home. They'll be staying here for a month, my kids can't wait to see their cousins. Before they go back to the US, they'll be passing by Hawaii to visit other relatives. I'm here now looking for some cheap hotels where they could stay in Hawaii.
