The Real Superstars

By eating a diet that stresses fruits, whole grains, vegetables, lean proteins, olive oil and red wine for some, the risk of heart disease and certain cancers can be lowered. Here are some of the foods with protein benefits that we should add to out diet.

BROWN RICE. According to Japanese researchers, the outer layer of the grain [rice bran] can lower blood pressure by up to 20%.

STRAWBERRIES. These hearty fruits can lower levels of C-reactive protein, an indication of inflammation in blood vessels. The berries' flavonoids and Vitamin C help lower LDL levels [bad cholesterol].

BROCCOLI. This veggie has a phytochemical called indole-3-carbinol which helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

ORANGE JUICE. The citrus juice has folic acid and B vitamins that help break down homocysteine [an amino acid that increases heart disease risk] while vitamin C tackles heart-damaging free radicals.

TEA. The drink's antioxidants [polyphenols] have been shown to lower LDL by 16%. Based on a recent study, women who drank at least 2 cups of either black or green tea a day showed lower levels of homocysteine.

The Importance of Health Insurance

Two weeks ago, my daughter's boyfriend was hospitalized because of Dengue. His dengue was severe and had to undergo blood transfusion. He stayed in the hospital for a week and is now home recovering. He does not have health insurance, so they spent a pretty large sum of money to pay for the medical bill. Getting sick nowadays could cost you a fortune and some families could not possibly afford the medical bills and expenses. I believe that everyone should have a health insurance and NC health insurance ensures you that money is available in case one of you gets ill.

Man Pains

We could be complaining about PMS most of the time or slap the pain of childbirth in our husband's face every time we're angry, but we must understand that men have pains too. Some of them are even more painful than dysmenorrhea.

Here are some of the classic man-pain we should know about so we can understand our partners better:

GOUT is caused by uric acid build up in the joints. It happens when the liver produces more of the acid than the body can excrete in the urine. The excess uric acid crystallizes and settles in the joints which causes swelling, stiffness and pain. Men in their forties are the most common victims and it is mostly hereditary. Too much drinking of alcohol and sodas may interfere in the body's elimination of the uric acid which can add to the risk of developing gout in the long run. Extreme quantities of Vitamin C and B3 [niacin] should also be avoided. Gout can be avoided and treated by limiting intake of purine-rich foods, organ meats, shellfish and sardines, which affects the production of uric acid in the body.

HERNIA happens when segments of organs in the gut, like the intestines, jut out of their thin membrane. It is seen as a painless lump to a painful protusion of tissue in the abdomen. Hernia is a condition that does not only affect a man's testicles but the entire abdominal area as well, and more commonly in the lower torso. Hernia can be congenital and it can also be caused by heavy lifting, obesity and activities that constantly stretch the abdominal regions. Contrary to beliefs, women can also get hernia. It can be treated through surgical procedures but in some cases no surgery is required.

Too Much Can Hurt You

I used to be so generous when I slather lotion onto my skin until I've read an article about it saying that too much can hurt. Over the counter creams with LIDOCAINE, METHYL SALICYLATE, and HYDROCORTISONE should be applied thinly. Whew! I'm just so relieved that I strictly followed doctor's to apply the skin asthma cream thinly onto my son's skin. His cream contains hydrocortisone. According to the article, too much of these 3 chemicals may not only hurt you but overdosage may be fatal.

An athlete, Arielle Newman died from sports cream overdose. She used large amounts of pain relieving ointments which contain methyl salicylate. Reports say, it may have interacted with other aspirin-based medicines she was using which caused her cardiac arrest. There were other reports on lidocaine overdose, an ingredient found in hair removal gels.

Although these cases are rare, it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you think that if a little bit is good, a lot is even better, think again. This is not true when it comes to what we slather on our body.

The article suggests we follow these rubbing rules:

  • FOLLOW LABEL DIRECTIONS - always use the correct dosage.
  • NEVER COVER THE AREA - don't wrap or apply heat to your skin after putting a product on your skin unless you are following doctor's instructions. Wrapping or oclusion increases absorption.
  • ASK QUESTIONS - anytime you get a treatment at a spa or salon that involves wrapping, make sure you ask what's being applied, if there are any dangers, and how long you'll be wrapped.
  • BE CAREFUL AROUND THE SKIN - protective top layers of keratin are lacking in thin-skinned areas [armpits, groin, eyelids] and mucuos membranes [nasal passages, mouth, vaginal and rectal regions], so medication have a stronger effect in these places.
  • TALK TO YOUR DOC - just because you get it over the counter doesn't mean you shouldn't tell your doctor about it.
  • CHECK FOR FDA/BFAD APPROVAL - products approved by them have been tested and are labeled with appropriate warnings and directions for use.

Elixir for Life

Did you know that you cut back the risk of heart disease by 25% if you take vitamin C supplements? Scientists have a new fresh look at the C. They found new ways on how the mighty C can help us stay healthy and look and feel younger. Here's a list of what the C can do for us...

1. PREVENT WRINKLES. The antioxidants in vitamin C helps turn back the clock. It helps form collagen which smooths fine lines and wrinkles.

2. PROTECT YOUR HEART. Taking more than 700 mg of C supplements daily reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by 25%. Women who take a combo of 500 mg of Vitamin C and 600 IU of Vitamin E daily can cut their stroke risk by 30%.

3. KEEP CANCER AT BAY. A diet full of vitamin C rich fruits and veggies is not only good for your heart. It may also lower risks of bladder, esophagus, stomach and lung cancers.

4. BOOST BRAIN POWER. The combination of C and E is smart for another reason, research shows it may lessen Alzheimer's risks by as much as 64%. The high fat content in the brain makes it vulnerable for free radicals but the C's antioxidants may act as shields.

5. SAVE YOUR EYESIGHT. The C can't prevent the need for reading glasses around age 45 but it can help prevent one of the leading causes of blindness, AMD or age-related macular degeneration.

6. HELP YOU LIVE LONGER. I am sure you know by now that green tea protects our body from toxins which contribute to cancer, stroke and heart attack. When you add citrus juices [lemon, lime, orange or calamansi] to green tea, it revs up the immunity-boosting power of the tea.

Vegas Vacation

Every year, my bowling friends and I travel around Asia. We take a week's vacation and visit one country each year. We've been to China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Guam and Hongkong. This year, they want it to be different, they want Vegas vacations this time. I begged off. Not that I want a Vegas vacation but times are really hard and I can't afford to spend my little savings for a vacation at this time. Hopefully, next year, I'll be able to join them again.

Wow! 629!

Just a few days ago I was reading the article posted by Is a Man's World about his first 600 clicks. I said to myself, wow! I wish I could get 600 clicks too. That's really something. I normally get about 320 to 450 clicks but just a while ago, when I logged in and checked my statistics, my eyes grew big when I saw that I had 629 clicks. Woohoo!!!

Thanks to all of you who has dropped on me yesterday, September 08. Special thanks also to Dragonfly Cottage, Sasha Says and Stay at Home Mom for running my widget on your sites. It's sad though that I cannot reciprocate all your drops, but I'll try to drop on you using my other sites. I hope you would all understand. Once again, Thank you so much.

I would also like to give special thanks to Adie for helping me with the bank yesterday. I would have not made it without her. She is such an angel.

Easy On The Salt

Too much of everything is not good, I'm sure you know that already. If you love salty foods and you go beyond the recommended daily allowance of 2000 to 3000 milligrams [that's about a teaspoon] you are prone to hypertension or high blood pressure. According to studies, lowering our lifetime intake of salt by just 1300 milligrams [or half a teaspoon] will reduce blood pressure.

To avoid the dangers of too much salt, here are some easy steps I got from Dr. Gerry H. Tan's article in Food Magazine. This will help us control our salt intake and move towards a healthier heart.

  1. Limit your salt intake to 1/2 to 3/4 of a teaspoon per day. This should include the salt used in cooking and in condiments and dipping sauces.
  2. Don't make a drastic cutback. Decrease your salt intake gradually. It will take 4 to 6 weeks before your taste buds adjust to less salt in your diet.
  3. Substitute lemon, herbs or spices for salt. your meals will not only be healthier but will also have added flavor.
  4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. These contain less salt than any other food on your table.
  5. Use your common sense. Stay away from chips and processed foods - these junk foods are loaded with salt.
  6. If you like processed canned foods, read the labels. You'll see that they're loaded with sodium. A simple technique like rinsing canned tuna, for example, will go a long way in removing excess sodium.

Spice of Life II

As promised.... here's the second part of the wonder spices....

MINT is a herb native to the Mediterrenean. Science is lending support to the ancient use of mint to soothe our tummies. As a digestive aid it stimulates bile secretion. As a decongestant, it relieves nasal, sinus and chest congestion. As an infection prevention, it kills bacteria including Herpes simplex virus. Mint also helps to relieve menstrual cramping. For tea - steep 1 to 2 tsp dried herb in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes and drink 3 cups daily. For bath - tie 2 tablespoon of driend mint in a sock then add to water.

CARAWAY is popularly known as the spice that flavors rye bread. It also helps relieve indigestion and menstrual cramping. For tea - steep 2 to 3 crushed seeds in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes and drink 3 cups daily.

CELERY SEED. Traditional doctors in India prescribe celery seed as a diuretic for arthritis. This medication is used to increase the flow of urine. It eliminates bloating or fluid retention. It also has sedative effect for anxiety and insomnia. to women, it relieves premenstrual bloating and to men, it relieves gout by clearing uric acid crystals where they collect in joints.

SAGE is an aromatic herb native to Mediterranean countries. It eases sore throat, bleeding gums and mouth ulcers [singaw]. It aids in digestion and also works as an antiperspirant. It helps reduce perspiration by as much as 50%. Steep 1 to 2 tsp dried leaves in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups daily. The tea may also be used as a gargle.

CINNAMON. This spice ground from the bark of a tree is more than a sweet, spicy treat, in fact, it is one of the world's oldest healers. For infection prevention, it works as a powerful antiseptic and kills many bacteria. As a digestive aid, it breaks down fats. Washing with cinnamon tea helps to suppress the fungus of candida albicans responsible for vaginal yeast infections. The tea also helps lower blood sugar level. for wounds, sprinkle powder on minor cuts and scrapes after washing thoroughly. For tea - dissolve 1/2-3/4 teaspoon powdered cinnamon in a cup of boiling water. Drink 3 cups daily.

CAYENNE owes its heat and its healing values to the chemical capsaicin. The pods and seeds of capsicum are grounded to make cayenne. As a digestive aid, it stimulates saliva and stomach secretions. For chronic pain, capsaicin neutralizes the chemical that sends pain messages to the brain. It helps relieve headaches and lower cholesterol level. For tea - put 1/4-1/2 teaspoon in a cup of boiling water, drink 3 cups daily after meal. For gargle, mix 1 teaspoon each cayenne powder and honey, plus a dash of lemon juice in a cup of warm water. For massage oil, mix 1/4-1/2 teaspoon in a cup of warm vegetable oil. You can apply it to your chest as a liniment.

My Coming of Age

I really can't understand why some women fret about reaching the age of forty. I turned 41 last month and I'm beginning to notice fine lines and some wrinkles but I don't dwell too much on that. My hair is salt and pepper but I really don't mind because hair dyes can do the job. There isn't much difference as when I was in my thirties except of course now, I have to wear eyeglasses.

Food Friday: Corned Beef Sinigang

food friday

Sinigang is a famous dish in the Philippines, it is typically sour and usually prepared with tamarind. Other ingredients like lemon, calamansi, and kamias can also be used for sinigang, but for corned beef, I recommend tamarind. Tamarind is also available in powdered form and it is easier to use when cooking sinigang.

A few years ago, a good friend invited us to dinner and he ordered corned beef sinigang. That was the first time I've heard of it and was really curious on how it tastes. It was so good so I tried making my own version.

Ingredients
:

1 can Corned Beef (any brand is ok but I prefer the chunky ones)
1 packet Sinigang Mix
4 cups of water
3 tomatoes, halved
1 onion, quartered
1 eggplant, sliced diagonally
1 radish, sliced diagonally
3 pieces okra (lady finger), halved
2 pieces long green chili pepper
4 small pieces of gabi (taro), peeled
1 cup kangkong (swamp cabbage) leaves
12 strings beans, cut into 3-inch long pieces

Directions:

1. Bring the water to boil. When the water starts boiling, throw in the taro. Simmer until soft. Add the onion and tomatoes.
2. Add in the sinigang mix. Stir.
3. When the onion and tomato have softened, add the Corned Beef.
4. Bring to a boil, let simmer, then add the string beans and radish. When the radish and green beans are almost done, add the eggplant, then the okra and green chili pepper. Simmer for 2 minutes. Turn off the heat then add the kangkong leaves. Cover for a few minutes.

I had to cheat on the photo and I apologize for that. Mine didn't turn out well so I had to borrow from yahoo images. Sorry guys.

Fun Night with Friends

I was out with my bowling friends last night. I haven't seen them for months and was surprised to see A and S got big. It was understandable with S because she recently gave birth to a baby boy. We had fun and enjoyed a great dinner and I was so glad we were able to catch up on things. But before saying goodbye, A whispered to me that like me, she too is contemplating on whether or not to take diet pills. I'm not really sure about it but if I hear more testimonials, then... I might as well.
