Germs are everywhere!

As moms, we try to instill in our kids all the good values so they'd grow up to be God-fearing, loving, honest, and kind. We love it when our kids know how to share and are generous. But when they share toys, they are also sharing germs. It could be good for them because getting them exposed to germs helps develop their immune system.

Even so, we still want to be careful and if possible, keep those flu days to a minimum. A sick child can mean a cranky, miserable child, not to mention missed school and the risk of infecting others. It is always better to be prepared for the usual bout of illnesses that come when the season changes or when our kids mix in the classroom.

Of course, nothing beats a good hand washing. It may not be able to eliminate all the germs ut it can at least block the transmission of most common diseases. Frequent hand washing can cut back the rates of flu and diarrhea. But what if soap and water are not immediately available? Hand sanitizers are okay but may not be enough. For me, a flu vaccine is still the best bet for avoiding flu. It may not always provide total protection and you may still get the flu when vaccinated, but it is still worth getting because it can at least lessen the severity of the illness.

Alternative Treatment May Help

What goes on in your mind when you hear the word cancer? To many, cancer is such a scary word and often, people think about death when they hear the word, especially because almost everyone knows someone who got really sick or died from the dreaded disease. So, what really is cancer? It's an abnormal growth of cells which tend to proliferate in an uncontrolled way and spreads all throughout the body. It happens when cells that are not normal grow and spread very fast.

When a person is diagnosed with cancer, treatment should begin immediately for better chances of full recovery and cure. It is only when it's too late that a person dies from the disease. If your family has a history of cancer, it would be best to have regular check-ups. I've also heard that alternative cancer treatments have shown some promise in helping people with cancer. Some health professionals may not approve of this because for them, medicine is still the best. But for people who are desperate, they would try anything and everything that would help. Many people with cancer are interested in trying complimentary and alternative cancer treatments, just like my uncle who have tried an alternative lung cancer treatment. It has helped him cope with the signs and symptoms caused by the disease. He used it as a supplement to treatments he received from his doctor.

Alternative cancer treatment can work hand in hand with medication. But it's still best to consult with your doc if you're interested in trying and find an alternative cancer center that will help you best in the healing process.

Go Fish!


There was an advisory issued back in 2004 cautioning women against eating more that 340 grams of fish in a week due to the risk of mercury poisoning. But a recent study debunks this fear of fish, there are more benefits to eating fish than risks, according to experts. In fact, a mother's minimal fish intake during pregnancy is being linked to her child falling at the bottom 25% of the class and doing poorly in tests that assessed social behavior, fine motor activity and communication skills.

The omega 3 fatty acids, found abundantly in fish was strongly associated with brain development of babies while inside the womb. So, pregnant women should be eating more fish to have brighter kids. If you're worried about mercury, there are a lot of fish and seafood variants that are not high-risk for mercury content like shrimps, scallops, sole, flounder, clams, king crab, oysters, tilapia, catfish, sardines, crayfish and light small tuna. Big fishes like swordfish, marlin, big dark tuna and sharks carry the highest risk of mercury contamination.


In touch with friends again

It was good to be in touch with old friends once again. It's actually one of the reasons why I stay online on most times that I'm free. Many of my friends are scattered around the globe and it's nice that we found each other on friendster and facebook. We set a certain time 3 or 4 times a week to chat and catch up on things. We even exchange emails and send online greeting cards on special occasions and holidays. I'm happy that I found them online, chatting with old friends has become part of my relaxation after a long, exhausting day.

Leftover Tips


After a party or a big holiday meal, try to get leftovers into the refrigerator within two hours. Harmful bacteria grow quickly at room temperature. Try keeping foods in shallow containers to allow them to cool quickly. Foods containing milk and eggs spoil more quickly, as much as possible, don't let desserts and cakes sit on top of the counter for a long time.

If you have not eaten leftovers within three days, it will be wise to throw them out. If you freeze them, it's alright because they can last for a few months. Heat leftovers to steaming, or at least 165 degrees Farenheit. For gravy, bring to a boil before serving.

These simple steps of keeping and re-heating leftovers can keep your family safe from food poisoning.

Don't Take It For Granted

Want to know what kind of personality a person has? Check out his bathroom. This to me is one of the most important rooms in a house. You could have a dull living room but your bathroom should have everything. I'm very particular with how my bathrooms look and what's in them. I wouldn't want my guests using a shabby bathroom during my parties. The bathroom should have the best of everything.

From the color of the tiles to the kind of fixtures I install, It should have an aura of calm and beauty. The bathtub should be relaxing and the taps elegant. Even the towel railings should match the theme of the entire place. Cabinets and accessories be accessible and functional. Even the toilets and wash basins should be regal in every way. The bathroom should leave a good and lasting impression on anyone who uses it.

Lastly, the mirrors and lighting should be in unison with everything in the bathroom to keep the flow of the entire place intact. A well maintained and impressive bathroom could easily erase any bad impression on scrutinizing and critical guests. You may have have the most lavish bedroom or classy living room, but with a badly designed bathroom, expect to hear the worst comments you can ever hear.

So don't take your bathroom for granted, it is after all the most private place in your house.

Spice of Life III

Before rummaging through your medicine cabinet when you're not feeling better, why not check your spice rack first? The herbs and spices we have in our kitchen can be just as essential as the conventional medicine we're used to when it comes to preventing and treating diseases. Science proves it that many spices and herbs have medicinal qualities and can help prevent everything from cancer to the common cold. Let's get to know the 10 most popular herbs and spices and see how they can help improve our overall health.

1. BASIL can help combat colds. It is rich in antioxidants which help boost immunity. It also acts as an antimicrobial which fights germs that can cause colds. Try to get 1 to 2 tablespoons a day and mix it with your favorite dishes.

2. CUMIN prevents cancer. The curcumin in this spice inhibits the enzymes that help cancer cells invade healthy tissue and also keeps tumors from developing the new blood vessels that help them grow. Six tablespoons of seeds or 1/2 teaspoon of powder each day can keep cancer at bay.

3. THYME can help ease a cough. The herb is an antispasmodic, which helps with bouts of nonstop coughing. Its antiseptic properties also make it very effective against inflammation of the throat, which can cause coughing. try to get 2 to 3 teaspoons a day. You can use it to top your roast or simply mix it with your vinaigrette.

4. CLOVES can help ease arthritis pain. Chinese herbalists say that cloves have hot and moving properties that relieve arthritis pain caused by cold and stagnation. They contain a phytochemical that interrupts the pathways of a protein complex in the body that's been linked to inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Try to get 1/2 teaspoon a day.

5. TURMERIC is an ancient spice that gives curry its deep golden-orange color. It reduces the inflammation in the body that causes pain. Curcumin, a component in turmeric inhibits cell enzymes that contribute to inflammation. Try to get 1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day. You can add it to your soup or use it to flavor your grilled fish.

6. NUTMEG lowers blood pressure. Warming spices like nutmeg can bring blood from the center of the body to the skin. This helps disperse the blood more evenly throughout the body, reducing overall pressure. This spice is great for soups and steamed vegetables. Try to get 1/2 to 1 teaspoon a day.

7. ROSEMARY improves memory. The ursolic acid in rosemary inhibits the breakdown of a neurotransmitter essential for memory. Try to get 1 to teaspoons a day.

8. CINNAMON fights diabetes. It contains a substance that can help cells respond to insulin, resulting to reduction of blood sugar levels. Try to get 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (1 stick a day). Mix it to 2 tablespoons peanut butter and spread over sliced apples.

9. GINGER calms nausea. A substance in ginger shuts down a nerve receptor in the body that triggers the vomiting reflex. Drink it as a tea or eat candied ginger.

10. GARLIC reduces cholesterol. This kitchen staple is an antioxidant and it helps prevent the oxidation of cholesterol in the arteries. Try to get 3 to 5 crushed cloves a day.

He pukes...


Is it normal for a dog to puke? My dog, a shih tzu, pukes regularly and I'm a bit worried about it. I've heard from other dog owners that this is a common problem with dogs especially that we are in a tropical country and a shih tzu is not so used with the hot weather. We asked the vet about this and she said it doesn't necessarily mean the dog is sick and it's a casual thing but she gave Lokii pet supplements. I just hope it helps him because the kids are worried every time he pukes.


My friend and her SIL

My friend was telling me about her sister-in-law who can't hold down a job, but she believes she is entitled to the same things as her hardworking siblings. When my friend and her husband bought a new car two months ago, she heard her SIL making a side comment, saying it isn't fair that she never owned a car. And when she heard that they have been planning to make early reservations at Westgate for their Las Vegas vacation this summer, she said "It must be wonderful... some of us don't get to go on vacations."

Her SIL has always been like that and during the first few years of their marriage she didn't know how to react whenever she complains about how hard her life is, so she would rather keep quiet. As the years passed she got used to it and has learned to deal with it. Now she tells her (in a nice way) that the new car and vacation were earned from working really hard and not the results of mere luck. Go friend! Kudos to you!

Beating Inflammation

Inflammation, touted as the cause of everything from acne to Alzheimer's and from digestive problems to obesity may sound a little scary. But did you know that inflammation also known as acute inflammation can actually be a good thing? When our body detects something wrong, like an injury or an illness, our immune system's first line of defense is to send out Tcells, white blood cells and lymphatic fluid to the affected area. Water and blood also plays a major role by flooding the scene to remove toxins and flush the area. It's when these antibodies attack that causes circulation, swelling and sometimes, pain - all of which actually help the body defend itself against infection and illness. It happens both externally and internally. External in response to scrapes, bumps, bruises and scratches and internal to fight infections and disease. It's our body's quick immune response that ends as soon as the injury has healed.

But wait, eating the wrong kinds of foods, according to researchers, also causes inflammation, not the acute one but the chronic kind. Over time, chronically inflamed organs and tissues start to degenerate, toxins build up and our organs are depleted of vital nutrients. This will eventually take its toll, damaging the intestines, heart, kidney, pancreas, joints, skin and bones.

Luckily, the foods to calm this type of inflammation are easily accessible. Foods like oily, cold-water fish, apples and onions, hot peppers, pineapple, dark leafy green veggies, flax seeds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, olives and olive oils are the perfect antidote. Most of these foods are rich sources of omega 3 fatty acids, which help counteract the damage and may prevent the oxidation of bad cholesterol. Make sure you include them in your diet and steer clear of packaged goods, snack/junk foods, margarine, sugar, fried foods, soda, jams, pastries, bagels and hard cheeses.

My Cousin's Wedding

These last few days I've been under a lot of pressure thinking about too many things. And when I'm like this, I have the tendency to overeat. I can see my waistline bulging and my pants are getting tight. Mom even teased me earlier, saying that if I don't stop, I won't fit in my gown. And my cousin's wedding is just two weeks away! I need to get rid of these pounds quick so now I'm on a hunt for weight loss products that won't let me down. I've tried other products before but they were not really effective. I need something that will put off the fat permanently.

Know Your Mr. Right

Woohoo, It's the love month again! Aside form June and December, February is also a marrying month. You are in love, engaged and soon to get married, but, have you tried asking yourself if he is the right man for you? Oooops, don't get me wrong. I am not insinuating anything but rather, give you to tips so you'll know if he is the right one. I have been married for 21 years and to be honest these things never crossed my mind when I was younger. All I knew then was I am so in love with him. I am lucky my husband have been very good to me and to my children. He never cheated on me and stood by me through the years.

Ok going back to the tips, here are some of the things you should know. Choosing the right man is one thing that is really important in a relationship. If you think that everything you are looking for in a man is with him, try looking further and see if these qualities match.

Know his character. Before deciding on marrying him make a research on his personality. Ask his friends and relatives about him and how he behaves. Observe his actions and how he reacts in situations. Sometimes, when you are so in love, you tend to disregard this matter. Investigate the family background. It is very important to know that he came from a very good family. No weirdos, rituals or anything of a kind. Does he spend more time with friends than his family? Is he a drug user and does he drink too much alcohol? Consider checking on his educational background too. Doing so can give you an idea if he can provide for you and your soon-to-be family.

Check his health. It is important to know if he's been treated in the past for psychological reasons. Is he the suicidal type? Was he ever admitted for heart problems or high blood pressure? These reasons, however, should not stop you from marrying him but at least you will have a good idea on how to deal with it in the future.

Check his lifestyle. Does he spend his money wisely? Does he splurge on things? Does he have a passion for sports car and Fossil watches? Does he have a criminal record? Know his plans for the future. He may not be earning too much but having a stable job is good enough. Know his culture too. It is important to know where he came from and try to familiarize yourself with his culture before marrying him. Most of all, consider marrying him for his good qualities and not by his good looks.
