Looking at the sky on Friday (16)

Weird weather. That's what we've been experiencing lately. The sun would be shining so bright in the morning until noon and then it would rain hard in the afternoon as if there's a storm. This kind of weather makes a lot of people sick. I hope the weather is fine at your end. Happy sky watching!

The Scent That Inspires

The mere scent of chocolate can boost your mood and spark creativity. Research shows that the fragrance caused a 30% dip in theta brainwaves, which control attentiveness. The delicious scent lulls the brain into a focused state of calm, making it easier to come up with brilliant ideas.

The next time you feel sluggish, go ahead and sniff those delicious chocolate cookies in the jar, it won't hurt too if you take a bite, just don't eat them all, haha. Or better yet, light a chocolate scented candle.

Easy Cleaning

Hubs and I are considering to convert the living room flooring to ceramic tiles. We have a little dog and even though he knows where he should pee, he sometimes miss the target. I thought a ceramic tile would be perfect. Its smooth surface makes it easier to wipe clean, it's waterproof and easy to maintain and long lasting. The carpeting in the living room is kinda old and faded already so instead of replacing it with a new one, we'll save more with ceramic tiles.

Ward Off Cold and Flu with Curry

Women in India serve their families an immune-strengthening broth which features curry, cumin, garlic and lemon three times a week to prevent sickness. The spicy broth is also used as home remedy at the onset of cold and flu symptoms. My Indian neighbor tells me it is so effective that congestion, stuffiness and other symptoms are relieved almost immediately after it is consumed, making the use of stronger medication unnecessary.

I also did a little research and found that curry is so rich in phenolic compounds, anti-inflammatories that reduce pain, swelling and tissue inflammation as quickly and as effectively as prescription anti-inflammatory meds but without the risk of side effects. According to experts, the powerful antioxidants in cumin, garlic and lemon build immunity, fortifying the body against pathogens in just one week. And here's an added perk, eating curry just once every six months can boost brainpower. Thanks to curry's curcumin, it inhibits the buildup of harmful protein deposits in the brain.

To ward off cold and flu, try this recipe: In a small pot, heat 1 teaspoon olive oil. Add 1/2 teaspoon each curry and cumin; 2 cloves garlic, grated; 1 tablespoon lemon juice and 12 oz. water. Simmer for 5 minutes, or until reduced to 1 cup. Add salt and pepper to taste, if desired.

Mellow Yellow Monday #20

Yellow fever has swept my nation after the death of former president Corazon C. Aquino. Amidst the poverty and desolation, our "loving" president Gloria Arroyo can afford to dine lavishly and with such dignity in America's most expensive restaurants. If martyred senator Ninoy Aquino once said "A Filipino is worth dying for." the current dispensation sees it in a different light.

Hope everyone of you had a terrific weekend. Happy MYM!

Surprising Causes of Bad Breath

Brushing our teeth, gargling with mouthwash and using breath strips are the things we do to keep our breath smelling fresh. But you'll be surprised to know that the things we do to eliminate bad breath can actually make matters worst. Recent research reveals that daily use of foaming agents and other chemicals found in some toothpaste and mouthwash brands can dry out oral tissue, causing you to have bad breath. Here, take these simple steps to outwit the chemicals' bad effects.

Most toothpaste products contain sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), a harsh foaming agent. To lessen toothpaste's corroding effects, rinse your mouth with water for 1 minute after brushing. Do this to wash away most of the SLS so it won't stick to your teeth and gums where it can intensify damage. When buying toothpaste, read the label and go for natural pastes.

Some popular brands of mouthwash contain sodium chlorate, a chemical that's been banned in the UK to be used in daily dental products because it is considered toxic. According to experts, it is not necessary to use mouthwash every day since brushing and keeping the oral cavity moist are already effective at warding off bacteria and bad breath. But if you really have to use one, they suggest looking for a chemical-free rinse made with grapefruit seed extract. The citrus-based rinse is naturally antimicrobial.

Breath strips that dissolve on the tongue and promote instant fresh breath often contain propylene glycol. This drying tissue irritant is also an ingredient in antifreeze. When buying breath strips, look for brands that don't contain this damaging chemical.

And to freshen your breath in a pinch without using any of these harmful chemicals, follow this: With your mouth closed, place your tongue against the top teeth on the right side of your mouth, then swish your tongue to the left; move down to the bottom-left teeth and then over to the bottom-right teeth. Repeat 10 or more times. This boosts saliva production to ward off the dryness that makes breath stale and lets bad bacteria flourish.

Keep smiling! :)

My Frugal Husband

Frugality, that's one thing I admire most with my husband. When something in the house needs repair, he'll be the one to do it except for those that need expertise. When the car breaks down, he will patiently source out parts and car accessories before bringing it in for repair. Economizing and saving ( even just a little) are our major concerns. We don't know how long our present economic condition will last and budgeting wisely, really is the key.

Cold Drinks + Hot Meals = Sensitive Teeth

One of the most common reasons why we have sensitive teeth is we're so used in taking cold drinks with our hot meals. Studies show that when a cold liquid comes into contact with teeth that are hot from food, microscopic fractures in dental enamel can result. Those breaks increase the risk of problems such as tooth sensitivity, cavities, stains, and chipping and breaking of teeth.

It is best to wait at least one minute after enjoying the last hot bite of food before drinking a cold beverage. The teeth are closer to body temperature by that time. :)

Mellow Yellow Monday #18

Found this yellow, giant alarm clock while window shopping last week. The sales lady was kind enough to allow me to take a photo. I just don't know how loud the alarm sounds, maybe loud enough to wake up the whole neighborhood. Haha

Happy MYM everyone!

No More Sleepless Nights

If a cough has you tossing and turning through the night, try this easy kitchen remedy: Mix 1 teaspoon each honey and horseradish and 1/4 cup cold water. I warn you though, the taste isn't good, but the powerful spices in the mixture stimulate mucous membranes to secrete fluid, in turn flushing out the phlegm that's causing your cough. Plus, honey provides a coating that soothes your raw throat.

My Birthday Gift

My family knows how frugal I am when it comes to shopping for myself. They know I would never buy something unless I really need it or even buy something way past my budget. Yesterday was my birthday and they've decided to treat me with a pair of Dansko shoes. I wanted to refuse because I thought it was expensive. But when I saw that it was a clearance item, I gladly accepted. I mean, who could refuse this comfy slippers?

But now they have evolved and manufactures are turning them into attention getting features and packing them with lots of innovative added functions. Modern faucets, especially the ones from Price Pfister have more shapes, styles, finishes and functions than ever before. The kitchen faucet is one of the most used items in the home and it's important to choose a faucet that is durable and made of high quality materials.
