6 Problems That Ruin the Look of Your Home

You paint the walls, add new furniture, replacing the carpeting, and more, just so that your home looks the way you want it to. After all of this hard work, it's frustrating when a small problem in your home ruins the aesthetic appeal you are going for. To help you out, here are 6 common problems that might ruin the look of your home, and how to deal with them.

 Problem #1: Dirty Home Exterior

This first problem is one that we might not even notice most of the time. Over time, dirt and grime build up on our homes, and eventually it becomes hard to look at. The process is typically so slow however; that we don't notice the slight changes from day to day. It's only on closer inspection that we realize how dirty everything has become. To fix this, your home is going to need a bath. Rent or buy a pressure washer, and start hosing down your home. Make sure you not only do the house, but areas like your sidewalk and deck as well. This is a long process, but once you get going, it's amazing the difference it makes. As an added bonus, you might even boost the curb appeal when selling your home.

Problem #2: Leaky Pipes

When a pipe starts leaking, you may notice some wet spots in your walls or ceiling. They'll start small, and expand the more the pipe leaks. Before long you have a big brown spot in your white ceiling, and it ruins the entire appeal of the room. To fix the problem, you'll likely need to call in a plumber to address the situation. In some cases you may be able to tighten up a leaky pipe under your sink, but for more extensive issues, you're probably better off with a professional. According to Fix it Right Plumbing in Australia, “Unfixed pipes only lead to larger problems down the road, so it's better to get them fixed sooner rather than later.”

Problem #3: Stained Carpets

A common problem among pet owners is that of a stained carpet. But even for non-pet owners, accidents happen, and at some point, your carpet ends up with a stain on it. Maybe you spilled some wine, or your dog had an accident while you were away. Whatever the reason, there's now a big spot in the middle of your floor. To solve the problem, there are several home remedies you can try to remove stains from carpets. Past that, you may need a professional carpet cleaner to come in and treat the stain. If that doesn't work, your last option is to replace the carpet entirely.

Problem #4: Faded Paint

After you've painted a room, it looks great. The color pops, the entire room looks different, and it all feels new. Unfortunately, this look doesn't last forever. As time goes on, paint starts to wear off from our walls. The color fades, and stains appear near high traffic areas. If you want these stains and fades to go away, you're going to need to paint the room again. If you have paint left over, or you remember the color, you can paint it the same color again. But if you're in the mood for a change, now is a great time to try out a new color and do something different.

Problem #5: Disorganized

An easy way to fix the problem is a disorganized home. You have things lying around, or things set up in a way that makes the room look cluttered. Now, when you walk into the room, you notice all of the things you have out of place, rather than the decor you've worked so hard on. Luckily, getting yourself organized is easy. Throw away, sell, or donate all of the things you no longer need, purchase some storage bins to organize the remainder, and set up an organizational system that is easy to stick with.

Problem #6: Inadequate Lighting

The last problem that might be ruining the look of your home is the lighting. If things are too dark – or conversely, too light – then it tarnishes the entire look of the room. You want lighting that suits the function and atmosphere of each room, rather than just throwing in every lamp you find. It's easy to fix the lighting situation too – just install some light dimmers, move around some lamps, or use different colored bulbs. Here are some more tips on the interior lighting to get you started.

Don't Let Home Problems Ruin Your Home's Look

If you have some small problems in your home that are ruining the look, don't put off taking care of them. You've spent time and money fixing up your home, and you don't want messy stains and other distractions getting in the way. Most of the problems mentioned above, along with plenty of other home problems, are easily fixed, so get your home back to the way it should be and start enjoying the look again.

We have a pressure washer and I give my porch, etc. a good washing every time the seasons change - at least 4 times a year. I'm always amazed at how good the deck looks when I get done washing it.

The outside of my house could stand a good power washing. We got our deck powerwashed last summer and it was like a brand new deck!
Curb appeal makes a big difference in the look of a house. Pressure cleaning is helpful but you must know what you're doing or you can damage your house.

I'm working on fixing some of these. We do have faded carpet that I want to eventually replace with hardwood floors. Plus some walls are chipped and need a touch up.

I never knew we would have to paint our ouse about every 4-5 years. I will learn for the next time. Leking pipes can be a terrible thing so I will look out for that.

I do need to clean the outside of my house. The inside of my house needs a good cleaning too LOL. I would love to update stuff in my house to make it look more clean cut and refreshing.

I need to Power Wash our home and if I was going to rent one I would do my mother in laws as well. Then see if my sister would like to use the Power Washer as well to spruce up her home as she is wanting to sell it. As for Painting, ours is dirty and the walls look terrible so it is time to repaint. I just hate doing it as we rent our home and I believe the landlord should be he will not do anything.

You are so right with some of these, it is so easy for something to ruin part of your home, yet if we just keep an eye on things and fix issues as they come about it can be easy to keep on top of.

I totally agree! I work hard on maintaining the exterior of my home because I want it to look just as lovely as my interior. These are definitely factors to look into when you have a home.

I completely agree with all of these. We bought our home almost two years ago. We've been slowly working on fixing it up. Lots to do yet, but only with time.
You couldn't be more right. It's little things like this that are easy to maintain and make such a big difference.

Couldn’y agree more on this. Definitely the ones the most of the times makes our house horrible. Leaking pipes sometimes is a gross for me.
