What Do We Get from Junk Foods?

Junk food is described as unhealthy food and has poor nutritional value. It often contains high levels of saturated fat, sodium, sugar and food additives like monosodium glutamate (MSG) and tartrazine and lacks protein, vitamins, minerals and calories from sugar and fats . Junk food has lots of flavors, very tasty and is very appealing not only to our kids but to us adults as well.

Junk food is the slang word for foods with limited nutritional value. I know it is going to be hard for us mommies to encourage our children to avoid junk foods and instead of radically banning junk foods in our homes it is best to do it gradually. When buying or eating junk foods, it is better to check on the nutritional value at the back of the package. Check on the sugar, salt and fat contents. Candies, gums, sweet desserts, salty foods, chips, fried fast food and carbonated drinks are some of the major fast foods. Hamburgers and french fries are also perceived as junk foods.

Consuming too much junk foods often result to obesity in most kids nowadays. It is better to encourage our kids to eat healthy snacks instead, and explain to them that eating too much junk foods may be harmful to their bodies. Buying and filling your refrigerator and pantry with healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, bread and whole grain crackers is one way to help them avoid junk foods. Encourage them to eat less of food products containing high fructose corn syrup usually found in catsup, barbeque sauce, in some fruit juices, sweetened yogurt and cereals.
