My way of short-circuiting stress is through stitching. When I pick up those needles, I know I am not just creating something with every stitch but I'm also lowering stress. I can sit down for hours doing a project without noticing the time.
If you haven't tried stitching, I suggest you try it. I have also read that stitching/knitting triggers the body's relaxation response as effectively as tai chi, resulting in lowered heart and breathing rates.

I rarely have that kind of time anymore, but I still keep my needles in the living room. Someday, I'll pick them back up...
How I wish that I can go do cross stitching again, I miss this. I had this hobby during my college days..But I have no time anymore to do it again.
